Michelangelo's Pieta in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, Italy. I remember waiting in a very long line at the World's Fair in New York when I was 5 years old to see this. I was in awe even as a little girl. Truly a masterpiece if ever there was one.

Renaissance Art (1400 -1500)

The Pietà (1498–1499) is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture by Michelangelo Buonarroti, housed in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.This famous work of art depicts the body of Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after the Crucifixion. The theme is of Northern origin, popular by that time in France but not yet in Italy. The statue is one of the most highly finished works by Michelangelo.
