Mel's Drive-In. A legendary diner from 1947 in San Francisco. And it is still there. In October 1963, it was the center of a racial dispute not allowing african-americans to work at the front desk. Thousands protested, and more than 100 protesters were arrested. The picketing ended when Harold Dobbs, a San Francisco City Supervisor who had run for Mayor and lost, settled with the protesters and began to allow black workers "up front."

This might be my favorite thing ever: San Francisco Forever YA-ers on a Scavenger-esque YA Photo Hunt! I love these women! I love Mel's Diner! Gloria Bishop would love this whole scenario! Captioned by SF FYA: Breakfast Served Anytime (the phone says 6:30 PM) Bonus landmark: Mel’s Drive-In, home of American Graffiti and other films

Lost San Francisco landmarks that still exist in the movies - SFGate

Many old San Francisco landmarks, from the Sutro Baths and the old Steinhart Aquarium, are gone from the city but not from the city's famous movies. Check out the gallery above for some of our favorites, from the original Mel's Diner to the Embarcadero Freeway, in movies from "Vertigo" to "Bullitt" and beyond. Some of these landmarks aren't exactly "lost," but have changed dramatically since they were seen in the movies. Still, it's fun to see the old de Young tower on film.
