I think I found Orson’s inspiration, Horologion of Andronicos (Tower of the Winds)   The tower is built of white marble. At the top of each of the sides there is a  representation of a wind, symbolized by a male figure with the appropriate attributes. It had sundials on the external walls and a waterclock in the interior.  It had been buried over the centuries. It was excavated between 1837 and 1845 by the Greek Archaeological Society.
