The Mayflower Compact, signed by 41 English colonists on the ship Mayflower on November 11, 1620, was the first written framework of government established in what is now the United States. The compact remained in effect until Plymouth was incorporated into the short-lived Dominion of New England in 1686 and subsequently absorbed into the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1691.
In 1620, the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Massachusetts. They sought religious freedom instead of commercial profit. They has signed the Mayflower compact before coming ashore. They made an agreement in which they set out guidelines for governing their North American colony. The Indians taught the Pilgrims how to grow corn and helped them survive in the new land.
