Henry IV of France, shown here with his second wife Marie de Medici and their children. He converted to Catholicism and his excommunication was reversed. He issued the Edict of Nantes, in 1598 confirming Roman Catholicism as the state religion but granting religious freedoms to Protestants. He was able to bring stability and prosperity back to France, even if only for a short time.
