Lolo Soetoro (1935-1987), was the Indonesian and Islamic stepfather of Barack Obama. Soetoro and Stanley Ann Dunham met while both were students at the University of Hawaii and married in 1965. A geographer, he returned to Indonesia in 1966 to help map for the Indonesian government, while Dunham stayed in Honolulu to complete her studies. In 1967, Dunham and her six-year-old son moved to Jakarta to rejoin Soetoro. In 1970, Soetoro and Dunham had a daughter, Maya. They divorced in 1980.

Barack Obama is the only one who knows his true religion. Legally, he is considered a Muslim as his father was a black American Muslim. Obama was born to Barrack Hussein Obama Sr. of Nyangoma Kogela in Hobolul, Hawaii. At the age of two, his parents divorced and Obama stayed with his mother who later married Lolo Soetoro who was also a Muslim.
