Steller sea lion pups await their mother’s return from feeding offshore. The tide drops & forms small protected tide pools in which the pups spend their days together, learning to swim in the care of their guardians. The pups are looked after by designated adult females while their mothers are out hunting. Over fifty species of prey have been identified in the sea lion diet, but these large pinnipeds mostly prefer small schooling fish like herring. Photo by @IanTMcAllister @PacificWild.
