Espalier Fruit Trees for our orchard. Espalier = the horticultural and ancient agricultural practice of controlling woody plant growth originally for the production of fruit,by pruning and tying branches to a frame so that they grow into a flat plane, frequently in formal patterns, against a structure such as a wall, fence, or trellis.
Pleached Hornbeam trees - Pleaching is the weaving branches of multiple trees together for privacy, wind & sound block. Best trees for pleaching are Lindens, Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), Beech, Apple, Pear, Hawthorn, & Carob. The American Hornbeam (Carpinus Caroliniana) is hardy and holds some of it's leaves during winter to provide a privacy screen year round. Because each tree is trained to have a single stem, there is space below a pleached hedge for other plantings (a hedge on stilts!)
Tree ivy, plain and simple, is the indispensable greenery for making quick festive effects. Cut long, leafy lengths and use them to trail down the centre of the Christmas table, to garland around the backs of chairs, or wired in short bunches onto one long length of garden twine to create a garland.
