I used this canola oil/dishsoap mixture on Japanese beetles when they attacked the ferns in my yard and it really worked! I read elsewhere that they also don't like garlic so I also added some garlic powder to the mix.  I made the mix in a gallon jug and therefore increased the amounts (didn't measure - just dumped stuff in) and then I poured it into a spray bottle - just mix well before using.
