Johnny Mathis, singer of popular music. His hits include Chances Are, Misty, It's Not for Me to Say, Come to Me, A When A Child Is Born, Certain Smile, Gina, What will Mary Say, Too Much, Too Little, Too Late, & Wonderful Wonderful. He also sang the Family Ties theme song with Deniece Williams. He has sold well over 350 million records worldwide and received the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. He also has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

John Royce "Johnny" Mathis was born in Gilmer, TX, to Clem Mathis and Mildred Boyd. The family moved to San Francisco, where he grew up. Mathis was a star athlete at George Washington HS in SF. He was a high jumper hurdler, he played on the basketball team. In 1954, he enrolled at SF State Univ. on an athletic scholarship, intending to become an English teacher physical education teacher.
