Carcanet or carcan is a jeweled collar or necklace, from the old French, carcan, meaning collar. Carcanets were typically quite elaborate and formal, and worn closely fitted. The style seems to have first appeared with the reemergence of the necklace during the end of the medieval period in the late 1300s.

July 8 is the Anniversary of German artist Käthe Kollwitz’s birth in 1867. A painter, printmaker and sculptor, Kollwitz’s work offered an eloquent and often searing account of the human condition, and the tragedy of war. Her empathy for the less fortunate, expressed most famously through the graphic means of drawing, etching, lithography and woodcut, embraced the victims of poverty, hunger and war. Her work was initially grounded in Naturalism, and later took on Expressionistic qualities.
