Home Insurance Building, Chicago by William Le Baron is generally noted as the first tall building to be supported, both inside and outside, by a fireproof metal frame. It is considered to be the first skycraper to be built in the world.

In fact, the building weighed 1/3 of what it would have weighed if it had been constructed from stone. In 1890, two additional floors were built on top of the original 10-story building.
