At the time of Hattie’s death, only whites were allowed to be buried in the cemetery, so her final wishes to be buried there were ignored. Instead, she was buried in the Rosedale Cemetery.  Hattie was an American Actress, famous not only for her role of Mammy in Gone With the Wind, but as the first African-American actress to win an Academy Award. The monument stands at the Hollywood Forever cemetery, erected in 1999 by the new owners as a sort of apology for not honoring her final wish.
