Ark Royal with Phantoms, Gannets, Wessex, and Buccaneers aboard

The old Ark Royal (R09) served from 1955 until 1978 and during her final decade carried FG1 Phantom fighters and Buccaneer long range strike aircraft capable of delivering tactical nuclear weapons. She gave potential enemies sound reason for prudence and diplomacy rather than military gambles. Here Gannet AEW aircraft are parked across the stern, five FG1 Phantoms along the flight deck and some Buccaneers on the bow.

Phantoms on a US Carrier presumably a Midway-class. Sometimes I look at an aircraft carrier in amazement. The ingenuity . the raw determination . to fly planes off and land on a ship, in the middle of an ocean.
