Hamming code is a category of error correcting codes that developed by Richard Hamming. Parity checking was already being used to detect errors in the calculations of the relay-based computers of the day, and Hamming realized that a more sophisticated pattern of parity checking allowed the correction of single errors along with the detection of double errors. http://blackandwhitecomputer.blogspot.com/2013/07/hamming-code.html
Numerical Methods for Scientists and Engineers by Richard Hamming Numerical analysis is a subject of extreme interest to mathematicians and computer scientists, who will welcome this first inexpensive paperback edition of a groundbreaking classic text on the subject. In an introductory chapter on numerical methods and their relevance to computing, well-known mathematician Richard Hamming ('the Hamming code,' 'the Hamming distance,' and 'Hamming window,' etc.), suggests that...
Richard Hamming. (1915 – 1998) was an American mathematician whose work had many implications for computer engineering and telecommunications. His contributions include the Hamming code (which makes use of a Hamming matrix), the Hamming window, Hamming numbers, sphere-packing (or Hamming bound), and the Hamming distance.
