Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) was a late Romantic composer, whose later Symphonies and Song Cycles gave a foretaste of modern atonality. His symphonies were on a grand scale, often lasting more than an hour and played by huge orchestras. He had a significant influence on later composers and his most popular piece is the Adagietto from his 5th symphony used in the movie "Death in Venice".
