Steinbeck was a marine biology enthusiast, and even went on a specimen-collecting boat expedition around the Gulf of California with his friend ecologist Ed Ricketts. A kayak isn't quite the same, but you'll still get the experience the area's natural bounty. When you glide across the water in Monterey, you'll encounter countless sea otters, seals, pelicans and other creatures.
