Giant Ground Sloth Megatherium | Giant Ground Sloth | Extinct around 10,500 years Before Present (BP), though some dates suggest 8,000-7000 years BP.

Giant Ground Sloths lived in North and South America and went extinct about 10,000 years ago. These would be so cool to still have around!

The Giant #Ground #Sloths: The giant ground sloth is believed to have weighed about 2.5 tonnes, the same as an Asian Elephant! Their fossils have been found from Patagonia to Alaska. The last ground sloths seem to have died out about 10,000 years ago. Saw this skeleton in the National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC when I was a kid. Must see!!!

Megatherium (Giant Ground Sloth). It weighed up to eight tons and upright stood about 20 ft tall. Went extinct in the Late Pleistocene. We think this picture is of the skeleton on display at the London Natural History Museum.

Ice Age: Sub-Zero Heroes - Sidney "Sid" (John Leguizamo) is a ground sloth who is clumsy, annoying, slow moving, fast-talking, unintelligent, unfit, and unattractive member with a good heart. Little is known from Sid's life other than that Sid once lived in a tree with other sloths that always wanted to leave Sid behind when the migration occurred, using several different ways to leave him behind.
