Pyramids of Giza, soaring above the city of Cairo, Egypt. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the most substantial ancient structure in the world - and the most mysterious. According to prevailing archaeological theory - and there is absolutely no evidence to confirm this idea - the three pyramids on the Giza plateau are funerary structures of three kings of the fourth dynasty (2575 to 2465 BC).
The Old Kingdom of Egypt (c. 2613-2181 BCE) is also known as the 'Age of the Pyramids' or 'Age of the Pyramid Builders' as it includes the great 4th Dynasty when King Sneferu perfected the art of pyramid building and the pyramids of Giza were constructed under the kings Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure. The historical records of this period, the 4th-6th Dynasties of Egypt, are scarce and historians regard the history of the era as literally 'written in stone'. (By Joshua J. Mark) --AHE
The Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun has now been confirmed as a man-made structure and part of a complex of three pyramids in the local area. Currently estimated to be over 20,000 years old, the discoveries raise fascinating questions about ancient European cultures and the level of technology they had. The main pyramid is larger than the Great Pyramid of Giza. We need to ask whether there was an Egyptian influence and be on the look out for more undiscovered ancient cities.
The Great Pyramid of Giza is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza pyramid complex bordering what is now El Giza, Egypt. It is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one to remain largely intact. Credit: Wikipedia
