The 1979 Ryder Cup at The Greenbrier was a beginning of a new era, as additions made to the Great Britain and Ireland squad to include all of Europe meant that golfers such as Seve Ballesteros and Antonio Garrido could participate for the European team. Many hoped that this change would put an end to the near total domination by the U.S. that had existed since the Second Cold War, but the Americans still won by six points.

George Duncan (1927, 29, 31) Turned down a football career with Aberdeen and his decision was justified by by an impressive golf career including the 1920 Open Championship. Having played in the inaugural Ryder Cup in 1927, he skippered Britain to victory in the return match two years later, where he thumped Walter Hagen 10&8 in the 36 hole battle of the playing captains. Record: P5 W2 L3 H0.
