ASFA defines Category I indications as disorders for which apheresis is accepted as first-line therapy, either as a primary standalone treatment or in conjunction with other modes of treatment. Examples include thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), myasthenia gravis, and Goodpasture syndrome with diffuse alveolar hemorrhage.
THE BEAUTIFUL VIOLET of a periodic acid-Schiff stain belies the crescentic glomerulonephritis that was shown to be anti-glomerular basement membrane disease, or Goodpasture Syndrome. That name lies too; there's little good pasture for those of us stricken with this disease. I live on borrowed kidneys and human ingenuity.
