Our thoughts and prayers are with the Palm Springs Police Department, and the families of the slain and wounded officers. Three officers have been shot, two of which have died. Officer Jose Gilbert Vega was a 35-year veteran who was due to retire in December. Officer Lesley Zerenby had recently returned to work after giving birth to a baby girl just four months ago. The wounded officer is alert and doing well.

No cop without training to deal with PTSD and mental illness should be let to go in the streets. The family of Kyle Cardenas, a veteran suffering PTSD delusions, called the VA Crisis hotline on Sept. 12, 2015, and asked for medical help for their son. The family knew they can not trust police that's why they specifically asked for a crisis team instead trained to handle situations like this. Norfolk Police Department (VA) Officer James B. Gilbert was shot and killed when he responded to a report of a man making suicide threats. When the officers arrived they observed the man leaning back on his bed holding a gun. Thinking the man was asleep they began to approach him. The suspect then opened fire with a .45 caliber handgun, fatally wounding Officer Gilbert in the head. The other officer returned fire and killed the suspect. EOW 9/28/2001.
