The Secret Behind Billy The Kid's Graveyard Jail in Fort Sumner, New Mexico

William Bonney, aka “Billy the Kid,” was famously shot by Lincoln County Sheriff Pat Garrett in Fort Sumner, New Mexico on July 14, 1881. He was buried in the Old Fort Sumner Cemetery alongside Tom O’Folliard and Charlie Bowdre, two members of the Kid’s gang.

Fort Sumner - Pete Maxwell House Peter Maxwell (1848-1898) - The only son of New Mexico land baron, Lucien B. Maxwell, Peter was living at Fort Sumner during the reign of Billy the Kid and it was at his home that the Kid was shot by Pat Garrett in 1881. This was the home of both Peter and his father.
