The Fire Academy opened its entrance exam to women in 1978, the state of New York did not have its first female firefighter until 1982. FDNY added 4 new female firefighters, bring the total to 41 out of the 10,400 FDNY members that are women. The calendar portraits of these women show a small but growing population within the New York Fire Department. These women are changing the face of the FDNY. Tracey Lewis is the second African American woman to be promoted to Lieutenant in 12 years.
