So simple - would work well for the chickens. 4x4 posts, staple the hardware cloth to the 2x4's and then sandwich with more 2x4's on the inside of the fence so hardware cloth is more secure. Could even fake the 4x4's with those metal staked in fence posts and frame it with 2x4's but doubt that would be cheaper. Easier to install than digging into this clay though!
