Came from the slave days, and was considered a medical disease which needed curing if a slave was wanting to escape. So, metaphorically speaking, this word can be used as a noun if you feel trapped and ache for escape.:

This photo is a grear illustration of bondage because, as you can see, the string around the woman is fairly thin and could be easily broken, therefore, her bondage is an illusion. This concept is best illustrated in the novel when an illusionist "traps" her audience by seemingly making the exits disappear, causing a panic. However, in truth, the viewers were never truly trapped, thus making their bondage only as resticting as they allowed it to be.

Dit plaatje inspireert mij dan ook omdat je zonder gezichtsuitdrukking toch de expressie kan zien/voelen, door de handen die je ziet en de lakens als benauwing voelt. Ook door de contrast tussen zwart en wit. (Dit moet me dan weer meteen denken aan de film: Mirrors)
