Gondolas rotate to raise/lower the boats from one level to the other.  Eleven locks connected the two canals until the 1930s, and in 2002 the Falkirk Wheel reconnected them.

Falkirk Wheel Lock - for those who don't know - this is a Ferris wheel for boats - leading to an aqueduct and tunnel.  Fun ride. Best trip of my life.
