Sticks to his principles, becomes world famous as an Olympic runner who wins a gold, leaves the limelight to be a Christian missionary in China, ends up in a concentration camp there, and dies there a few months before the war's end, faithful until his quiet death. A real hero.
Eric Liddell, The Flying Scotsman, won Gold in the 400m. at the Paris Olympics in 1924. His story is told in the Best Picture movie Chariots of Fire. Born in China, he returned to that country as a missionary, and died there in an internment camp in February 1945.
