Elizabeth Blackwell, b. 1821, was the first (known) female medical doctor. (An individual known to the world as James Miranda Barry became a doctor in Edinburgh in 1812, but upon his death was discovered to be a woman).

In 1859 Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States, as well as the first woman on the UK Medical Register
