The proclamation of Irish Independence by Irish Republicans during the Easter Rising of 1916. The uprising was brutally crushed and several leaders were executed by British forces; however, the defeat served as a rallying cry for Irish independence, resulting in a protracted insurgency and eventual Irish independence in 1922.
