n-a-s-a: The Eagle Nebula is part of a diffuse emission nebula, or H II region. This region of active current star formation is about 7000 light-years distant. Several spires of gas that can be seen coming off the nebula. The descriptive names reflect impressions of the shape of the central pillar rising from the southeast into the central luminous area

The new Hubble photo of the pillars of creation is sharper than the original, and also has a wider field of view. It also reveals the base of the cold, gassy columns for the first time

The Eagle Nebula. It measures 70 light years x 55 light years, light travels at an incredible 186,000 miles per second, you do the maths. It's mind blowing, then think that it's just one tiny part of our galaxy which in turn is one very tiny part of our universe..... Feeling generous?
