The Duke of Devonshire by Sir Thomas Lawrence, 1811 - William George Spencer Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire KG, PC (1790 – 1858), styled Marquess of Hartington until 1811, was a British peer, courtier and Whig politician. Known as the "Bachelor Duke", he was Lord Chamberlain of the Household between 1827 and 1828 and again between 1830 and 1834.

William Cavendish (1551–1625), 1st Earl of Devonshire, Aged 25, 1576, Hardwick Hall, son of the redoubtable Bess of Hardwick and William Cavendish, he was a politician and courtier.  His mother supported him in luxury when he was a young man, and after his death, and his elder brother's, he inherited vast wealth, part of which he reportedly used to buy his title. Ancestor of the earls and dukes of Devonshire.
