While Douglas Fairbanks Jr. manage to transition to sound as a successful leading man and served with distinction during WWII, he would never be as famous as his silent screen icon dad Douglas Fairbanks Sr.
In 1929 Joan Crawford married Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., the son of Douglas Fairbanks and the stepson of Hollywood royalty Mary Pickford.

1939 SPECIAL AWARD To Douglas Fairbanks (Commemorative Award) - recognizing the unique and outstanding contribution of Douglas Fairbanks, first President of the Academy, to the international development of the motion picture.
He joined the naval reserves before the war. During the war he served on the USS Massachusetts and was a Commando raider sent on several land attack missions. He retired from the reserves, years later, as a full Captain.
