Doris Duke ~ Doris Duke (November 22, 1912 – October 28, 1993) was an American heiress, horticulturalist, art collector, and philanthropist. Daughter of an immensely wealthy tobacco tycoon, Duke was able to fund a life of global travel and wide-ranging interests. These extended across journalism, competition surfing, jazz piano, wildlife conservation, Oriental art and Hare Krishna.
Doris Duke, who passed away in 1993, left few instructions about what to do with her billions. Trustees of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation — led for a long time by former University President Nan Keohane — had to grapple to define how a $1.2 billion endowment would be used. And then there was another major asset — worth far more: 2,740 acres in the heart of the best suburbs in New Jersey.
