Broadstairs, Stone Bay, Kent, a coastal town seaside resort on the Isle of Thanet, East Kent, England, about 80 miles (130 km) east of London. Elizabeth Freeman, or Mum Bett as she was also known, was one of the first enslaved African Americans in the state of Massachusetts to file a “freedom suit,” or a legal petition for freedom. Her 1781 county court case, Brom and Bett v. Ashley, was a direct challenge to the existence of slavery in Massachusetts and her victory set the precedent for a later Massachusetts Supreme Court’s ruling that marked the informal ending of slavery in the state.
