September 15, 1845:  Earlier in the year, 5,000 women cotton mill workers in and around Pittsburgh go on strike for a 10-hour day and an end to child labor.  Months into the strike, hundreds marched on the Blackstock Mill, one of the largest in the area.  The women broke down the factory's gates and forcibly expelled the scabs, while the men who accompanied them kept the police at bay.

Weavers at their looms in the cotton mill - During the 1890s and early 1900s the mills were very noisy and dangerous places to work due to the machinery. The workers developed a system of sign language to communicate with each other over the din of the machinery. Many people became ill with respiratory and lung conditions caused by breathing in the cotton dust. The majority of employees were women and children who worked around 12 to 14 hours a day
