Ohio State University Extension’s new animal welfare specialist Monique Pairis-Garcia is expanding her reach throughout the state during 2015. She is the assistant professor of animal sciences in OSU's College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences and started her dual teaching/outreach position in August 2014. A number of recent studies published in The Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science have indicated that the leading cause of dog abandonment is behavioral problems. A team of researchers for the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, headed by Dr. Mo Salman of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University, surveyed nearly 4,000 dog owners at 12 shelters across the US about their reasons for relinquishing their dogs.
