Carl Maxie Brashear (January 19, 1931 – July 25, 2006) was a United States Navy sailor. He was the first African American to become a U.S. Navy Master Diver, rising to the position in 1970.

In 1966 he was assigned to recover a hydrogen bomb that fell into the sea off the coast of Spain after two US Air Force planes collided. As a result, his leg was injured and later amputated. His life was made into a movie in 2000 titled “Men of Honor” starring Cuba Gooding Jr.
