Hutton joined the Black Panther Party at the age of 16, in 1966. On April 6th, 1968, when he was 17 years old, he was traveling in a car with a few other Black Panther members when they were ambushed by the Oakland police. They ran for cover in a building nearby. When the police finally threw tear gas into the building, Hutton stripped down to his underwear so that the police would know he was unarmed and he walked out. The police shot him 12 times

Kathleen Cleaver (1945 -) moved to San Francisco in 1967 to join The Black Panther Party..Cleaver became the communications secretary & the first female member of the Party’s decision-making body. She also served as the spokesperson & press secretary. Notably, she organized the campaign to free Huey Newton, who was jailed. In 1968. As a result of their involvement with the Black Panther Party, Kathleen and her spouse, Eldridge Cleaver, were often the target of police investigations.

The civil rights movement occurred in 1964. This brought about groups such as the Black Panther Party, and Malcolm X, who fought for segregation and and end to violence for African Americans. In the late 50s, the afro seen as feminine, however, in the 60s the afro and braids were viewed as a symbol of black power. They all wore shirts that might have said black is beautiful.

Members of the Black Panther Party, stripped, handcuffed, and arrested after Philadelphia police raided their headquarters, August, 1970. The party decided on Philadelphia as the site of its convention. On the Saturday before the convention a murder was committed; a Philadelphia policeman was shot and killed. On August 31, 1970, heavily armed police raided three Panther Offices; 2935 Columbia Avenue, 3625 Wallace Street, and 428 W. Queen Lane.

After a pre-dawn police raid of the Black Panther Party headquarters, members are stripped, handcuffed and arrested.
