Japanese Black Bears - Bears Of The World ; Like other Asiatic black bears, the Japanese black bear (Ursus thibetanus japonicus) usually has a pale yellow crescent marking on its chest. In Japan, it is also known as tsukinowaguma which means moon circle bear. Japanese Black Bear HABITAT Eastern Honshu is the only place in Japan where the black bears have any kind of a stronghold.
The symbol of the Smokies, the American Black Bear, is perhaps the most famous resident of the park. Great Smoky Mountains National Park provides the largest protected bear habitat in the East. Though populations are variable, biologists estimate approximately 1,500 bears live in the park, a density of approximately two bears per square mile. What will happen to the bears? A new bill would decimate national forests across the country by requiring the Forest Service to spend whatever it takes to comply with the requirement of logging at least 50% of public forest land each year.
