Kansas Artist, the esteemed Kansas artist, Birger Sandzen lived three lives in one as a painter, educator and crusader for art. He was born in Blidsberg, Sweden, on February 5, 1871 and grew up in a home where music, art and literature were loved and appreciated. In 1881 he began attending a boy's school in Skara, Sweden. He decided to become a professional painter and moved to Stockholm and later to Lindsborg, Kansas. He founded Bethany College there.
Coronado Heights is a hill in Lindsborg, Kansas. It is alleged to be near the place where Francisco Vasquez deCoronado gave up his search for the 7 cities of gold around to return to Mexico.In 1915 a professor at Bethany College found chain mail from Spanish armor at an Indian village excavation site a few miles SW of present CoronadoHeights. In 1936, a stone shelter resembling a castle was built on top of the hill. The view at the top of the hill is spectacular can see for miles.
