Cheap babyproofing! This is plumbing insulation from Home Depot. Less than $2 for 6 feet of it! It's slit down the middle and has sticky tape on the inside of each slit. You can get it in different sizes. I got one that was bigger around to put on our fireplace ledge (you can kind-of see in the background)
If you have a small child running around then you already know a fireplace can be a safety hazard. Not the actual fire itself but the surrounding area made of brick (fireplace hearth) that juts out a few feet.
