The Illawarra Steelers are an Australian rugby league football club based in the city of Wollongong, New South Wales. In 2012 Johns was announced as the eighth immortal of the Australian game. In February 2008, Johns was named in the list of Australia's 100 Greatest Players which was commissioned by the NRL and ARL to celebrate the code's centenary year in Australia. Johns went on to be named as halfback in Australian rugby league's Team of the Century.
