One of the major themes that seem to be emerging in Act I is the Role of Women. In the 1800s, women were supposed to be housewives and subordinate to their husbands. Nora, on the other hand, felt empowered in taking control of her own life when she payed for the trip to Italy, not her father. She takes pride in doing what is normally "a man's job" in that time period.

"Be careful, Isa," I implored her, "You only get one chance." "One is all I need." She drew back the arrow slowly, fixing her eyes on the glass window of the stone castle. "I'm no little girl." "I know." I gazed at her, longing for some glimpse of the friend I used to admire so greatly. But all I saw was steely determination, and a fierceness that war had burned into her.
