In Nov. 2008 a grand jury indicted Dick Cheney and Attorney Gen. Alberto Gonzales on charges that they blocked an investigation into the mistreatment of prisoners. Cheney has deep financial ties to for-profit prisons via the Vanguard Group--the largest investor of federally-funded, privately-held prisons in the US. According to the grand jury Cheney was “profiteering from depriving human beings of their liberty" and Gonzales was using his position to "stop the investigations"
