Beauty in riding habits. Late 1880s. Riding habits were constructed with a feminine silhouette, but were given such masculine details as buttons, cuffs and jacket lapels. A formal men’s hat, such as the top hat shown here, was worn in Victorian times (and later) - sometimes with a veil on the back. The tradition of menswear in riding habits is an old one.
Rosa Parks was asked to move to the back of the bus where black people were expected to sit, by the whites. When she refused, police became involved, essentially leading to her arrest. Rosa Parks is a true Civil Rights leader, due to her strength and bravery. This arrest eventually led to the Montgomery Bus Boycotts, where African Americans did not use the buses, but walked instead.
