In 1807 the slave trade was abolished in Britain, and in 1834 slavery itself was abolished throughout the British Empire - largely due to the work of William Wilberforce. In 1804 an independent Black African nation was established in Haiti - marking the end of slavery in the West Indies and Africa.

Danish Antilles consisted of Saint Thomas, Saint Jan, ,and Saint Croix.  The intention of Danish colonization in the West Indies was to exploit the profitable triangular trade.  The economy of the Danish West Indies was dependent on slavery. After a rebellion, slavery was officially abolished in 1848, near economic collapse of the plantations led to the islands being sold for $25m to the United States, 31 March 1917, renaming the islands the United States Virgin Islands.
