While stool samples showed only moderate increases in these genes, oral samples showed significant increases in their prevalence in samples taken from migraine sufferers. 16S rRNA sequencing confirmed that those with migraines had much higher levels of nitrate-reducing bacteria in their mouths. Further analyses indicated that the prevalence of these bacteria was driven by host physiology.
