Sea Point Pavilion circa 1977

Only the swimming pool remains today, but that too has been renovated into 3 seperate swimming pools. The big round building later changed to the Hard Rock Cafe and then stood empty for a long time. The building to the right became a Wimpy. Check the ROBOT text written on the road - this is a warning sign for the upcoming traffic light. But they called it a ROBOT. Haff!

From the Coulter family photo album, courtesy Hans Niehaus. Fred and Agnes Stephens owned The Homestead at Oranjezicht from 1907-1947. Their three sons were killed in the First World War. These photographs of a fund raising event in Cape Town, October 18-21, 1917, were taken by Charles Coulter who was married to the Stephens's fourth child, Alice. His photo album was found among his papers when Coulter's law firm was being wound up and rescued by Hans Niehaus - to whom thanks for allowing me…

One of the oldest institutions in Table Bay docks is the Penny Ferry, which for the proverbial penny(one cent) per head, plied across the entrance to the Alfred Basin in a matter of minutes, saving a two kilometre walk. The SS Kakabo shipwrecked in May 25,1900. Interestingly, film buffs may recognize this wreck, embellished with a funnel, in some of the scenes in the award-winning film Ryan’s Daughter (1970) starring Robert Mitchum and Trevor Howard.

Cape Town's Shipwrecks: SS Kakapo (May 25, 1900)

The Atlantic shoreof South Africa's South Western Cape is littered with shipwrecks, each with a story to tell. The notorious storms and fog along these shores provide a common thread to most tales,...

A North-Westerly gale was picking up and as the Kakapo steamed south, the storm increased in strength. Despite the storm she kept running at her top speed of 9.5 knots. The seas were huge and accompanied by driving rain - visibility was virtually reduced to zero. The officer-of-the-watch mistook Chapmans Peak for Cape point and once past Chapmans Peak he ordered ‘hard to port full steam ahead’. This resulted in her high and dry as she hit the beach at nearly full power.

The ill-fated SS Piratiny, a 5 000-tonne Brazilian steamship, was headed for Cape Town with a cargo of shoes, clothing, rolls of material and tinned sardines when its engine spluttered and failed. The wind drove the steamer against the rocks on the edge of this harsh and lonely land, and the Piratiny broke in two. Luckily, all crew were able to scramble to land safely.
