One of my best childhood memories is our visits to the "big" stores of Stuttafords, O.K. and Garlicks with their escalator towers that seemed to reach up to the heavens.For a country bumpkin like me, just to "ride" up five or six floors was an experience in itself. During Christmas these shafts were transformed into magic wonderlands with giant decorations stretching over all six floors.
